Forty years ago, a group of artists and art lovers organized an explosive contemporary art exhibition in Fribourg. Taking advantage of the pretext of the 500th anniversary of the entry of the canton of Fribourg into the Confederation, they found the necessary funds to present an event that will remain imprinted in the memory. Almost ten years later, in November 1990, Michel Ritter became the first director of the Centre d'art contemporain de Fribourg, which moved to the Petites-Rames 22 in the picturesque Basse- Ville. More than 10 years of exhibitions followed, making Fri Art one of the most innovative art venues in Switzerland.
The exhibition Fri Art was born from the void, the spirit of a Kunsthalle at the MAHF celebrates the energy of Fri Art by paying homage to a first generation of people who committed themselves to put Fribourg on the map of a globalized contemporary art.
