One of the best-known figures in contemporary photography, Ari Marcopoulos (*1957 in Amsterdam/NL) has been documenting the emergence of pop cultural phenomena and the formative figures of these movements with his camera for four decades. The exhibition at the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen – one of a few and the largest to date that he has realised in an art related context – aims at bridging the many years of his work in terms of its content and pays special attention to his film and video production. The video installation Alone Together (2021), an impressive documentation of a saxophone performance by Joe McPhee, forms the focal point of the project. The tension between the immediacy and the subliminal cultural and historical references lend the video portrait an uncanny intensity. A number of historical (and iconic) works presented on tables and walls of the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen frame the video works. These images are not only examples outlining the artist's inexhaustible productivity, but also the indispensable role of the photographic medium as the main witness of contemporary culture
